Ranking Controls

Control product visibility and ranking in search results with pin, boost, demote, and hide actions.

Ranking Controls

FilterIQ gives you full control over which products appear first in search results and which are hidden. Use manual controls for specific products or one-click presets for common merchandising strategies.

Merchandising Actions

Pin

What it does: Locks a product to a specific position in search results.

Use case: Feature a hero product at position 1 for a specific search term.

How to pin:

  1. Go to Merchandising in the dashboard
  2. Search for the product you want to pin
  3. Click the pin icon
  4. Select the position (1 = first result)
  5. Optionally, set the search query this pin applies to (e.g., only pin when someone searches "summer dress")
  6. Click Save

Notes:

  • Pinned products override all other ranking signals
  • Multiple products can be pinned to different positions
  • If two products are pinned to the same position, the most recently pinned one takes priority

Boost

What it does: Increases a product's ranking score, pushing it higher in results.

Use case: Promote seasonal items, new arrivals, or high-margin products.

How to boost:

  1. Go to Merchandising
  2. Find the product
  3. Click the boost (arrow up) icon
  4. Set the boost strength: Low, Medium, High
  5. Click Save

Notes:

  • Boosted products rank higher but can still be outranked by more relevant results for specific queries
  • Boost is relative — a "Low" boost on a product with high relevance may outrank a "High" boost on a weakly relevant product

Demote (Bury)

What it does: Decreases a product's ranking score, pushing it lower in results.

Use case: Push low-margin items, products with poor reviews, or old inventory to the bottom.

How to demote:

  1. Go to Merchandising
  2. Find the product
  3. Click the demote (arrow down) icon
  4. Set the demote strength: Low, Medium, High
  5. Click Save

Hide

What it does: Completely removes a product from search results and filter listings.

Use case: Hide discontinued products, draft products, or items you don't want discoverable via search.

How to hide:

  1. Go to Merchandising
  2. Find the product
  3. Click the hide (eye-off) icon
  4. Click Save

Notes:

  • Hidden products are still visible on your Shopify storefront (in collections, direct links) — they're only hidden from search
  • This is different from unpublishing a product in Shopify, which removes it from the storefront entirely

One-Click Presets

Presets apply merchandising rules automatically to groups of products based on conditions. Instead of manually boosting or hiding individual products, presets do it for you.

Available Presets

Enabling a Preset

  1. Go to Merchandising > Presets
  2. Find the preset you want
  3. Toggle it on
  4. The preset takes effect immediately

Preset Priority

When multiple presets or manual rules apply to the same product:

  1. Manual Hide overrides everything — if you manually hide a product, it stays hidden regardless of presets
  2. Manual Pin takes next priority — pinned products stay in their pinned position
  3. Presets are applied in the order they appear in the preset list
  4. Manual Boost/Demote is applied on top of preset effects

Custom Rules

For advanced merchandising beyond presets, you can create custom rules:

  1. Go to Merchandising > Rules
  2. Click Add Rule
  3. Define the condition (e.g., "product tag contains 'clearance'")
  4. Define the action (boost, demote, hide, pin)
  5. Set the strength (for boost/demote)
  6. Click Save

Condition Types

  • Product tag contains/equals
  • Product type equals
  • Vendor equals
  • Price greater than/less than
  • Inventory greater than/less than
  • Created date before/after
  • Metafield value equals/contains

Scheduling Rules

Rules can be scheduled to activate and deactivate at specific times:

  • Start date: When the rule becomes active
  • End date: When the rule deactivates
  • Use case: Boost Valentine's Day products from Feb 1-15, then automatically stop

Before publishing merchandising changes:

  1. Click Preview in the merchandising dashboard
  2. Enter a search query to see how results will appear with your changes
  3. Verify the product order matches your expectations
  4. Click Publish to make changes live
