Collection Filters

Create collection-specific filter overrides to tailor the filtering experience per collection.

Collection Filters

By default, FilterIQ applies the same set of filters across your entire store. Collection filters let you override that default and configure a different set of filters for specific collections.

You manage collection filters from the Collection Filters tab on the Filters page (/app/filters).

Why Use Collection Filters

Different collections often need different filters. For example:

  • A "Clothing" collection benefits from Color, Size, and Material filters
  • An "Electronics" collection needs Brand, Price Range, and Connectivity filters
  • A "Sale" collection might only need Price Range and Discount Percentage filters

Without collection filters, every collection shows the same filter sidebar. With collection filters, you can tailor the experience so shoppers see only the filters that are relevant to the products they are browsing.

How Collection Overrides Work

Collection filters operate as overrides on top of your store-wide filter configuration:

  1. Store-wide filters are the default. Every collection uses them unless a collection override exists.
  2. Collection overrides replace the store-wide filters entirely for that specific collection. When a shopper visits a collection with an override, they see only the filters defined in the override -- not the store-wide defaults.

This means that if you create a collection override, you need to include all the filters you want for that collection, not just the ones you want to add.

Creating a Collection Filter Set

  1. Go to the Filters page (/app/filters)
  2. Click the Collection Filters tab
  3. Click Add Collection Filter
  4. Select a collection from the picker:
    • Use the search box to find a collection by name
    • Browse the paginated list of collections
    • Each collection shows its product count
  5. Configure filters for that collection:
    • Add filters using the same interface as store-wide filter creation
    • Set filter types, source fields, options, and ordering
    • Use the live preview to verify the layout
  6. Click Save to store the collection filter set as a draft

Managing Multiple Collection Filter Sets

The Collection Filters tab shows a list of all your collection overrides. For each one, you can see:

  • The collection name
  • The number of filters configured
  • The last modified date

From this list you can:

  • Click a collection to edit its filter set
  • Delete an override to revert that collection back to store-wide defaults
  • Duplicate a filter set to use it as a starting point for another collection

Example: A Shoe Store with Different Filters per Collection

Consider an online shoe store with these collections: "Running Shoes", "Dress Shoes", and "Accessories".

Store-wide filters (the defaults): Brand, Price Range, Color

Collection overrides:

CollectionFilters ConfiguredWhy
Running ShoesBrand, Price Range, Color, Size, Width, Cushioning LevelRunners care about fit details (width, cushioning) that are irrelevant for other collections
Dress ShoesBrand, Price Range, Color, Size, Material, OccasionDress shoe shoppers filter by material (leather, suede) and occasion (formal, business casual)
AccessoriesBrand, Price Range, ColorAccessories only need the basic store-wide filters -- no size or material needed for laces, insoles, and shoe care kits

Notice that the "Accessories" collection does not need an override at all -- it uses the store-wide defaults. You only create overrides for collections where the default filters are not a good fit.

To set this up:

  1. Configure your store-wide filters (Brand, Price Range, Color) as normal on the Filters page
  2. Go to the Collection Filters tab
  3. Click Add Collection Filter and select "Running Shoes"
  4. Add all six filters (Brand, Price Range, Color, Size, Width, Cushioning Level), set their types and ordering, then click Save
  5. Repeat for "Dress Shoes" with its unique filter set
  6. Leave "Accessories" alone -- it inherits the store-wide defaults automatically

When to Use Collection Filters vs Store-Wide Filters

ScenarioRecommendation
All collections have similar productsUse store-wide filters
A few collections have very different product typesUse collection overrides for those specific collections
Every collection needs unique filtersUse collection overrides for each, or consider reorganizing your catalog
You want to add one extra filter to a specific collectionCreate a collection override that includes all the store-wide filters plus the extra one
You want to hide a filter from one collectionCreate a collection override that includes all store-wide filters except the one you want to hide

Interaction with Publishing

Collection filter overrides follow the same draft-and-publish workflow as store-wide filters:

  • Changes are saved as drafts
  • You must click Publish to push collection filter changes live
  • Publishing pushes both store-wide and collection-specific configurations at the same time

See Publishing for details on the publish workflow.

Troubleshooting

Filters not showing on a specific collection

  • Check if a collection override exists for that collection -- if the override has no filters configured, the filter sidebar will be empty
  • Verify the collection is published to the Online Store sales channel

Wrong filters appearing

  • Open the Collection Filters tab and check if an override exists for the collection in question
  • If an override exists but you want the store-wide defaults, delete the override
