Merchandising

5 Merchandising Strategies Every Shopify Store Should Use

Product merchandising controls which products appear first in search results and collection pages. Review whether your current ordering reflects query relevance, availability and store priorities before changing it.

Here are five strategies to evaluate against your catalogue and business needs:

1. Hide Out-of-Stock Products

An unavailable product can interrupt a purchase, but some shoppers may want a restock notice or an alternative. Consider hiding or demoting unavailable items when that matches your store policies, and verify how variant availability is handled.

2. Boost New Arrivals

A new-arrival boost can give recently added products visibility. Choose a recency window appropriate to your release cycle, preview the affected products and check that the boost preserves query relevance.

3. Promote On-Sale Items

Use current price and compare-at price to identify products marked on sale. A reference-price discount is not profit margin: margin needs reliable cost data. Keep sale boosts relevant to the query and review whether they displace products shoppers are seeking.

4. Bury Products Without Images

Missing images can make products harder to evaluate. Instead of removing them entirely (which might lose SEO value), push them to the bottom of search results where they won't waste prime real estate.

5. Surface Best Sellers

Use reliable sales data when selecting best sellers. A popular product may deserve visibility, but its past orders do not establish that boosting it will improve conversion for every query.

Implementation

FilterIQ supports merchandising actions and a set of configurable presets. Check each preset's conditions and preview the products affected. Manual presets, including best sellers, need you to select targets; enabling them alone has no product effect.

When combining strategies, test overlapping rules. For example, a sale boost should not make an unavailable item look purchasable. Review priority, hidden products and rollback before enabling rules on your storefront.
